Luonnonmuistomerkki, osa 2 / Nature Memorial, part 2

Before this course

In this spring semester I made Nature Laboratory -video where I did experiments with water-cress seeds, birch and juniper branches. I breeded the seeds in test tubes. I prepared the breeding ground from agar powder, water and multivitamin tablets. I mixed different substrates in six different nutritional supplements, namely: iron tablet, birth control pill, apple cider vinegar + chrome -product, antihistamine tablets, Panacod pain reliever pill and evening primrose + E dietary supplement product. I followed the growth of seeds by taking pictures regularly and made a video from the images.

Number 332 is from a study and a book called: The Red List of Finnish Species.

Regionally Extinct species

A total of 332 species were classified as Regionally Extinct in Finland. As in the case of threatened species, in many cases multiple factors have contributed to their extinction.

Main causes for extinction in Finland are:

Changes in the forest environment, mainly relating to the commercial use of forests:
reduction of old-growth forests and
the decreasing number of large trees,
decreasing amounts of decaying wood,
forest management activities, (metsien uudistamis- ja hoitotoimet)
reduction of burnt forest areas
and other young stages of natural succession

Questions that I am trying to get answers are:

Does man have a right to destroy nature? Are rare species important forms of life? Do we need them? Are we above the nature and why if we are? What does it mean to live with the nature? Can we separate ourselves from the nature? Are we not just animals in this planet? As good as smallest forms of life?
